What makes the popping sound while getting an adjustment?

When you visit our office for an adjustment to help cure your back pain and you hear a large popping noise, do you ever wonder what that is? We want to let you know that that noise is perfectly normal! The popping sound when you get adjusted is called cavitation, and is exactly the same thing that happens when you crack your knuckles.

During a back adjustment, your back undergoes quick, gentle stretching of the spinal joint, so you may hear a cracking or popping noise. This is caused by small pockets of air or bubbles, which are in the fluid that surrounds your joints known as synovial fluid. When joint tissues are stretched during a chiropractic adjustment, the pockets of air "pop," which creates that cracking sound you hear.

Now, not every adjustment results in a popping sound, in fact some chiropractic adjusting techniques never cavitate the joint. But if your adjustments results in a cavitation, know that it’s perfectly normal!
