Tips for the Desk Job Worker

Working at a desk job often means a sedentary life, but that does not have to be so! At Therapeutic Solutions, LLC in Newport News, VA, we encourage our patients to live an active lifestyle. Take some of these tips to get moving even during the work day.

While at work, it is important to take “sitting breaks”. At least once per hour, stand up and stretch or walk around. Doing so will give your body a break from being in the same position all day. Plus, it will get your blood flowing better. Good excuses for quick walks are going to get water, visiting a co-worker’s desk, or taking the long route to the bathroom. In addition to refreshing your body, it may also give your brain a break (which is needed for good productivity!).

Do you take the elevator in your office building? Try replacing the elevator with the stairs. As long as the climb is not unreasonable, you can raise your heart rate several times per day. If you keep taking the stairs every day, you will also notice a change in your stamina and maybe even your leg muscles.

A sedentary lifestyle can lead to weight gain, stress, heart disease, and other health problems. Take these tips to help you move around more during the day if you have a desk job.

Working at a desk job means lots of time spent sitting down. So keep these tips in mind for your health! For more information visit our website at www.therapeutic-solutions-llc.com or feel free to contact Dr. Brill & staff at 757-873-4131.

How Chiropractic Care Helps the Heart

Chiropractic care helps put the entire body in its best form, including the heart. Spinal adjustments have been shown to decrease blood pressure and lower your heart rate. Read on to learn about some of the benefits chiropractic care has on heart health. At Therapeutic Solutions LLC in Newport News, VA, Dr. Christopher Brill is dedicated to helping his patients achieve a healthy life.

When a vertebra is misaligned, this causes pressure onto the tissues and nerves which can interrupt messages to and from the brain. When the C1 vertebra is misaligned, it can disrupt messages that go to the heart. Adjustments to the spine realign the vertebrae allow nerves and tissues in the surrounding area to function as they should.

It is thought that when the C1 vertebra is misaligned, it sends out signals that contract the arteries. Therefore, both systolic and diastolic blood pressures are increased. When the C1 vertebra is moved back into place, it decreases the blood pressure again in both systolic and diastolic measurements. Another benefit is a decreased heart rate. It is thought that when the rest of your cervical spine is adjusted, the eight pairs of nerves in the cervical spine are able to function properly which may reduce the heart rate.

Chiropractic care offers benefits for the whole body. For more information visit our website at www.therapeutic-solutions-llc.com or feel free to contact Dr. Brill & staff at 757-873-4131.

How You Should Be Lifting Large or Heavy Objects

When lifting heavy or large objects, the proper lifting technique could be vital. Injury could result from lifting incorrectly. Take some tips from Therapeutic Solutions LLC where Dr. Christopher Brill wants all his patients to practice safe lifting.

Summer is just around the corner now which usually means there is a lot of moving going on. Have you ever had back pain after helping a friend move? More than likely, it was due to improper lifting. Hurting yourself while lifting can not only cause pain but it could be the beginning of a chronic pain. This is also why it is important to see a chiropractor for back pain; you need to know the extent of your injuries and how it will affect you down the road.

To properly lift an object, place your feet shoulder-width apart with one of your feet slightly in front of the other. Then, squat down to the level of the object. Only bend at your hips and your knees; keep your back straight. Keeping your chest out and shoulders back helps. Also, keep your head looking straight forward. Lift the object slowly by straightening your legs. Your back should still be straight. Remember you should never twist your body as you lift. When carrying or holding the object, keep it close to your body at the level of your belly button. To set the object back down, do so by squatting; keeping your spine in line.

Track and Field: Stretches for Runners

With track and field starting up this month, many athletes are going to be pushing their bodies to do amazing things. With this, preparation is needed to avoid injury. Dr. Christopher Brill of Therapeutic Solutions, LLC in Newport News, VA is sharing some tips for stretching before and after those track meets.

Before Your Run

You want to be sure that you do a dynamic stretch before your run. This will loosen up your muscles and prepare them for extension. Try:

·        Walking lunges- Lunges while you walk! Alternate legs.

·        Leg swings- Hold onto a wall or a chair and swing your leg forward and back. Alternate legs.

These work to hit all of your leg muscles.

After Your Run

After your run, you want your muscles to heal with flexibility. Skipping stretching could lead to tightened muscles and tendons.

·        Quads: Standing up, bend one of your legs up so your heel is brought towards your butt. Press the top of your shoe into the palm of your hand. Alternate legs.

·        Hip Flexors and Hamstrings: Kneel down and put one foot in front of you, having your leg bent at a ninety-degree angle. Push your right hip forward. Alternate legs.

·        Calves: Sit on the floor with one foot stretched in front of you. Reach for your toes. Alternate legs.

Remember that static stretches should be held for about thirty seconds to get the benefit of the stretch. For more information, visit our website at www.therapeutic-solutions-llc.com or feel free to contact Dr. Brill & staff at 757-873-4131.

Choosing a Pillow for a Healthy Sleep Position

Your whole day of hard work healing your spine can all be thrown away if you are sleeping in an improper position. Sleep posture is both necessary for a healthy spine and healthy sleep. Dr. Christopher Brill of Therapeutic Solutions, LLC in Newport News, VA is sharing tips for picking out the right pillow for you. The right pillow will hold your cervical spine in a neutral position and support a healthy position for the rest of the spine.

For Back and Side Sleepers:

Those who sleep on their back or on their side will benefit from a thicker pillow. You want to be sure that the pillow cushions the gap between your bed and your head comfortably. You do not want your head to hang down or be pushed forward. This can create a kink in the cervical spine; hindering nerve messages to and from the brain. It can also lead to spinal pain when you wake up.

For Stomach Sleepers:

Sleeping on your stomach is the worst position for your spine. However, some patients do prefer this way to sleep. If you are a stomach sleeper, make sure to use a very thin pillow or even no pillow at all. This keeps your head from being higher than the rest of your body and keeps your cervical spine in line with the rest of your body. To take pressure off the rest of your spine, place a pillow under your pelvis/ stomach area.

A good night’s sleep leads to a restored body and healthy spine. For more information, visit our website at www.therapeutic-solutions-llc.com  or feel free to contact Dr. Brill & staff at 757-873-4131.

Questions to Ask Your Chiropractor

Asking questions is what allows people to continually grow their knowledge. This is important in life; especially when it comes to health. When you are new to chiropractic, it can be hard to know where to start. This is why at Therapeutic Solutions, LLC, we want to give our patients some key questions to prepare for your first appointment. Dr. Christopher Brill wants all of his patients here in our Newport News, VA office to be a partner in their health.

Knowing what your chiropractor’s technique is will help you prepare for appointments. Ask your chiropractor what steps are procedures are going to be part of your treatment. Also, ask how it will help treat your specific condition.

The second step is to find out what to expect after appointments. Will there be any pain? Will you feel relieved afterwards? This helps you get ready for the appointment and be able to plan your day after the appointment.

One more key question is to ask what you can do to continue progress at home. Whether it involves lifestyle changes or exercises, there will be something you can do at home to keep moving in the right direction.

To ask us more about the conditions we treat and chiropractic, feel free to contact us! For more information, visit our website at www.therapeutic-solutions-llc.com  or feel free to contact Dr. Brill & staff at 757-873-4131.

The Causes and Treatments of Rib and Chest Pain

Did you know that rib and chest pain can be relieved by chiropractic care? Dr. Christopher Brill of Therapeutic Solutions, LLC in Newport News, VA wants his future patients to understand what type of conditions cause rib and chest pain, and how chiropractic care could can help.

Just as misalignments can happen to the spine, they can also happen at the front of the body where the ribs meet the sternum. Misalignments cause stress and pressure on the joints and the surrounding area. They put pressure on the nerves surrounding the area, which can cause pain directly to the area but also can affect function of many of the body’s systems. Another condition that can cause rib and chest pain is a Costo-Transverse Sprain, inflammation of the rib cartilage. Pain and difficulty breathing deeply are symptoms that affect those with this condition. Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is another condition that may be causing pain in the ribs. This condition, however, also includes pain and loss of feeling in the shoulders, arms, and hands. This is a condition where the first rib sits higher than its corresponding vertebra, pressing down on nerves and blood vessels.

Through spinal and joint adjustments, customized stretches and exercises, and possibly massage, these conditions can be controlled. Manipulating the areas of the body that are causing unnatural pressure releases that pressure and allows the body to perform as it should, plus it will relieve pain and irritation.

Neck Pain: Causes and How Chiropractic Care Can Help

Neck pain is something that can stop an entire day’s activities. For neck pain that is controlling your life, turn to Therapeutic Solutions, LLC located in Newport News, VA. Chiropractic care can help you understand where the pain is coming from and how to relieve it.

Neck pain can be caused from a variety of things. A small slip or a major car accident are two drastically different events but they can both do major harm to the cervical spine and the surrounding structures. In addition to accidents, neck pain can result from degenerative disorders or even just bad posture habits. Neck pain can even come from a small accident that may have happened years ago. Accidents, disorders in the spine, and poor posture can all lead to misalignments in the cervical spine’s joints.

Chiropractic care at Therapeutic Solutions will begin with a full examination of the area. It will be useful to know how long the pain has been around, what has been done to relieve pain, and if anything makes it better or worse. A customized treatment plan will then be created to get you back on track. Through spinal adjustments and therapeutic exercise, we will have you feeling better and able to prevent further injury.

Tips for Good Posture

Poor posture can lead to strained muscles and a curved spine. It is important to keep good posture while sitting and standing. This is why Therapeutic Solutions, LLC of Newport News, VA wants to give some tips for proper posture.

The first step of attaining proper posture is to make sure your spine is in line. When standing, make sure to stand tall with your shoulders back. Tuck your stomach in, and let your arms hang naturally beside you. To make sure you head is in line with your spine, check to see that your earlobes are in line with your shoulders. When sitting, make sure your feet are flat on the floor and your knees are at the same level or lower than your hips. Do not cross your legs and remember to relax your shoulders. When sitting in a chair for a long period of time, make sure it has good low and mid-back support.

The second part of having good posture is having strong muscles to support it. To stand tall with pulled back shoulders, try this trapezius exercise daily: Lie on your stomach with your arms flat on the floor in a ninety degree angle. (In the high-five position). Lift both arms up vertically by activating the muscles between your shoulder blades. Hold for five seconds and release. Do this twelve times, two to three times daily.

For more information about keeping good posture throughout many of the day’s activities, visit our website, www.therapeutic-solutions-llc.com or feel free to contact Dr. Brill & staff at 757-873-4131.

Chiropractic for Rotator Cuff Tears

Tearing the rotator cuff can be a painful and debilitating injury. Many may think the first option they have to repair a tear would be surgery. Here at Therapeutic Solutions, LLC in Newport News, VA, we believe there are other ways to heal and relieve pain besides surgery.

The rotator cuff is the group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint. They keep the ball of the humerus (the upper arm bone) firmly into the shoulder socket. Many who have torn their rotator cuff have done so due to repetitive overhead lifting. They are also commonly caused by long-term heavy lifting and bone spurs in the bones of the shoulders. Sports like tennis and baseball, as well as occupations like carpenters are commonly associated with rotator cuff tears, as well. Most that tear a rotator cuff are over the age of forty.

Although keeping your shoulder immobilized allows rest and pain relief, it could allow the connective tissue within the joint to thicken and tighten. This is a condition referred to as frozen shoulder.

Physical therapy can help the rotator cuff regain flexibility and strength without surgery. Along with adjustments of the spine and joints associated with the rotator cuff, massage and stretching can help the rotator cuff return to normal function.

If you have trouble reaching over your head, behind your back, a dull ache in the shoulder or difficulty sleeping on the affected shoulder, you could have a rotator cuff tear. For more information visit our website at www.therapeutic-solutions-llc.com or feel free to contact Dr. Brill & staff at 757-873-4131.

Fertility Issues and How Chiropractic Can Help

Nothing is more frustrating than fertility troubles. Creating a family is often the number one goal for someone to achieve in life and having difficulties with that can be frustrating, saddening, and not to mention costly. However, when becoming pregnant is difficult, the first thing you should try is chiropractic care. Here at Therapeutic Solutions, LLC in Newport News, VA, Dr. Christopher Brill has experience treating women having trouble conceiving.

When the nerves throughout the body do not have a clear path to and from the brain, messages are disrupted and the body does not function as it should. Dysfunctional nerves are often present because the spine is not in line. When the spine is misaligned, this is called a subluxation. These subluxations put pressure on the nerves and blood vessels, as well as other parts of the body, disrupting messages to and from the brain. This leads to impaired organ function and general health, including fertility.

When your spine is in line, the rest of your body is functioning as it should. Dr. Brill can make spinal adjustments to put the spine back in line and relieve the pressure that can be causing fertility problems. Spinal adjustments consist of small, quick movements to the spine and joints.

If you or a loved one is struggling to become pregnant, consider coming into Therapeutic Solutions for an evaluation! For more information visit our website at www.therapeutic-solutions-llc.com or feel free to contact Dr. Brill & staff at 757-873-4131.

Tips for Everyday Spinal Wellness

The hustle and bustle of our daily life can be hectic and sometimes our health can take a backseat to our list of to-dos, appointments, and work. However, correcting certain habits throughout your day can make you feel a lot better, all without taking any extra time! Dr. Christopher Brill of Therapeutic Solutions, LLC of Newport News, VA has some tips he recommends for overall wellness.

If you spend your days working at a desk, sitting in the right position is very important. Make sure your chair is a good fit for your back, providing support in the right places. Your feet should touch the floor at a ninety degree angle. Your computer screen should be positioned so that you look up at it, not down.

Posture is important whether you are sitting or standing. Standing or sitting up straight, keeping your chin up, and wearing proper shoes will help facilitate good posture. While sitting, it is recommended to have your feet flat on the floor, without crossing your legs. For a job where you are sitting for long periods of time, it is recommended that you stand or stretch for a minute or two every half hour.

While lifting heavy objects, good posture is especially important. Improper lifting could lead to an injury. Keeping your spine in line and bending at the knees will help avoid injury. Twisting your body while lifting even light objects is not recommended.

Scoliosis and Chiropractic Care

Scoliosis is the abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. While many cases are mild, severe progression can lead to chronic back pain, and difficulties with the heart and lungs. Here at Therapeutic Solutions, LLC in Newport News, VA, Dr. Christopher Brill has extensive experience treating patients with scoliosis, helping them slow down and even stop the progression of scoliosis.

Stopping the progression of scoliosis works the best in children before puberty stops. Wearing a brace while the bones are still growing makes it much more likely that there will be low progression in the curvature.

There are two types of braces recommended for scoliosis. One is an under-arm brace that will help curves in the middle spine and lower spine. A full-torso brace called the Milwaukee brace will help curves that are in the upper spine or the neck, as well as the lower and middle spine.

Dr. Brill also has treatment for those who do not need to wear a brace or for those whose bones have stopped growing. Spinal adjustments, physical therapy, home exercises, and monitoring can all help achieve pain relief due to scoliosis, as well as prevent future health issues in association with scoliosis.

Dr.  Brill can take x-rays to determine the severity of the curvature in the spine and determine the best treatment for your specific case. Scoliosis is best caught early. If you are concerned about your spinal health or the spinal health of a loved one, please visit Dr. Brill for an evaluation.

That’s why it’s important to consider nutrition when healing or prevention common ailments. Here at Therapeutic Solutions LLC, nutrition is one of the methods we utilize to help you get and stay well, including the increasingly popular and effective paleo diet.

If you’ve been searching for a path to better health and wellness through nutrition and other natural treatment, contact us and schedule a consultation.  We’ll be happy to answer all of your questions and set up a wellness plan that works for you.

History of Chiropractic Care

Although chiropractic techniques are commonly used today, they are rooted deep within our world history.   Some of the earliest writings in the history of recorded time mention using spinal manipulation to relieve lower back pain.  These techniques are mentioned in ancient Greek and Chinese writings dating as far back as 2700 B.C.  During Hippocrates life, 460 to 357 B.C., he published texts on the importance of chiropractic care in preventing disease.

The history of chiropractic care in the United States doesn’t begin until 1895, when Daniel David Palmer founded the profession by merging science and metaphysics.  Daniel David Palmer spread knowledge of chiropractic care techniques by founding the Palmer School of Chiropractic, a college that continues to be one of the most prominent chiropractic schools in the nation.  Now, doctors of chiropractic have gained legal recognition throughout the United States and are proven leaders in non-invasive healthcare.

Chiropractic care continues to grow and gain support as a cost-effective means of caring for your overall health.  I encourage patients to visit my practice and learn more about how the chiropractic techniques that can be traced throughout history can help you find lasting relief and wellness.
