Chiropractic for Children

Did you know that chiropractors regularly treat children? At Therapeutic Solutions, LLC we treat patients of all ages, but many do not realize that we treat children. Pediatric chiropractic existed for over 100 years and many childhood ailments will respond to this safe, natural form of health care. But why would a child even need chiropractic care? Children encounter many physical stresses during their growing years. This stress can cause problems in children’s spine and can occur at any point in their development.

Not only do children deal with the stresses of a growing body, but some are born with health complications. Many newborn children suffer complications like colic, reflux, breastfeeding difficulties, sleep disturbances and chronic infections. These problems are all associated with the nervous system and are often caused by spinal and cranial misalignments.

If you bring your child to Therapeutic Solutions in Newport News, VA, we will start by conducting a thorough history of your child’s health. We will then complete a physical exam, looking for any pediatric spinal problems. Each patient is a different case, especially in children, so Dr. Brill will tailor an individual treatment plan to help your child heal. We offer specific, gentle adjustments and manipulations to the child’s spine and cranium.

Treat Acid Reflux with Chiropractic

Acid reflux is a condition that occurs when your lower esophageal sphincter, a valve of muscle fibers where your esophagus and stomach meet, does not close properly. When this happens, the contents of your stomach, which includenaturally strong acids and enzymes used to break down food, can leak up into your esophagus and cause a burning pain in your chest, nausea and difficulty swallowing.

While medication can provide short term relief, chiropractic can provide long-lasting treatment. Dr. Christopher Brill uses chiropractic care to improve the overall health and function of his patients’ bodies, and he does this through spinal adjustments that keep all the systems of the body working properly. If there are interferences or misalignments in the spine, the systems of the body cannot function at peak levels, which leads to many different issues, including acid reflux.

In addition to adjustments, we provide patients with guidance on nutrition and lifestyle choices that can eliminate acid reflux and prevent its return. If your acid reflux is caused by a hiatal hernia, where the top part of the stomach pinches through the diaphragm muscle, Dr. Brill can treat that as well without drugs or surgery.

How Can Chiropractic Help Piriformis Syndrome?

Located deep in the buttock, below the gluteus maximus, the piriformis muscle extends from the sacrum to the outer hip bone and is responsible for stabilizing the hip joint and lifting and rotating the thighs away from the body. Often confused with sciatica because it produces a similar pain in the lower back and into the legs, piriformis syndrome is caused when the piriformis muscle becomes shortened or tightened or when the muscle spasms and becomes inflamed. When inflamed, the muscle can put pressure on the sciatic nerve that runs beneath it. If you are experiencing pain, tingling or numbness in your lower back, buttocks and legs, Dr. Christopher Brill can relive your pain and restore you to health in Newport News, VA.

A common factor that leads to the development of piriformis syndrome is the performance of activities with excessive weight bearing, changing direction and running. This means that many athletes, namely runners and weight lifters, suffer from this condition. Externally rotating the hip for extended periods of time is another factor. This is most often seen in ballet dancers and those who walk with their feet turned outward. Misalignment of the pelvis bones can also be involved.

At Therapeutic Solutions, LLC, we can use trigger point therapy, adjustment, stretching and strengthening exercises combined with inferential electo-therapy and electrical muscle stimulation to treat piriformis syndrome. These therapies reduce spasms and tightness and help the muscle heal. If your syndrome is caused by the way you walk, foot orthotics may be necessary.

Ear Infections and Chiropractic

Ear infections are a common affliction, especially in children, and can be either bacterial or viral, often resulting from another illness, such as a cold. Infection can cause ear pain, fever and irritability, and if ear infections become a chronic issue, they can even cause hearing damage and associated speech and developmental problems in children. While ear infections tend to be treated with antibiotics in most cases, if the infections occur regularly, chiropractic can be a more effective and less harmful way to treat the condition, and Dr. Christopher Brill has the skills and experience to effectively help you.

Before you take another round of antibiotics or opt for surgery, schedule an appointment with our practice in Newport News, VA to relieve your pain. Studies have shown that regular chiropractic treatment can decrease the frequency of ear infections by mobilizing drainage of the ear and strengthening the immune system to recover quickly and prevent future infection. A study showed that 80 percent of participants did not contract another ear infection for the six months of the study.

Can Chiropractic Treat Colic?

Defined as a condition where well-fed infants cry inconsolably for more than three hours a day, for more than three days a week, for more than three weeks, colic is a condition with no known common cause. Typically affecting 10 to 20 percent of babies between three weeks and three months old, it could be caused by an intestinal gas or an obstruction in the intestines, reflux, hypersensitivity, an intense temperament or an immature nervous system. If your baby has colic, he or she will often have a piercing cry, flexed legs, tensed muscles and clenched fingers.

While there is not one single cause of colic, research has shown that chiropractic can benefit colicky babies no matter the cause of his or her condition. Chiropractic can have a greater impact than medication, dietary changes and infant positioning. Several studies have established spinal adjustments as an effective method for relieving colic after only a few sessions, and Dr. Christopher Brill is able to help you and your baby find relief in Newport News, VA.

At our office, the chiropractor provides conservative, gentle and successful adjustments that are not only safe but incredibly beneficial for infants with colic. By making sure the spine is properly aligned, the chiropractor is ensuring that the nervous system and immune system can function at peak levels, which helps in colic relief.

Frozen Shoulder

Shoulders are ball-and-sockets joints consisting of three bones—the humerus (upper arm), scapula (shoulder blade) and clavicle (collar bone). The head of the humerus fits into a shallow socket in the shoulder blade and is surrounded and supported by strong connective tissues that make up the shoulder capsule. Frozen shoulder occurs when the shoulder capsule thickens and becomes tight, causing pain and stiffness. This condition develops in three stages:

  •  Freezing. Lasting between six weeks to nine months, this first stage involves a gradual increase in pain and stiffness. As the pain increases over time, your shoulder will become difficult to move.
  • Frozen. Pain may actually decrease during this stage, but the stiffness will remain for four to six months.
  • Thawing. Shoulder motion will slowly improve along with return to normal strength and motion. A full thaw can take anywhere from six months to two years.

Receiving early treatment for frozen shoulder is the best way to prevent stiffness and to stop your condition from becoming more serious, and at Therapeutic Solutions LLC, we use conservative chiropractic treatments to reduce symptoms and restore function to the shoulder joint. By adjusting the spine and then the shoulder, we can alleviate your pain and increase your range of motion. Repeated treatment combined with at-home exercises has proven to be very effective.

    Spinal Stenosis

If you’re experiencing lower-back pain, loss of feeling in your legs or a limp, you may have spinal stenosis, a degenerative condition that affects the spine. Symptoms are caused by a narrowing of the spinal canal, which can occur for multiple reasons, including thickened ligaments, a spreading infection, abscess, a congenital anomaly, degenerative changes or vertebral dislocations. While the painful and debilitating condition is chronic and without a cure, at Therapeutic Solutions LLC we can help you manage your pain, reduce symptoms and improve your quality of life.

Discomfort caused by stenosis builds gradually, separating the condition from others, such as herniated discs, which can have similar symptoms that appear much more rapidly. The treatment for stenosis usually depends on its cause. While medical doctors recommend pain medications and even surgery to provide pain relief, medication can have strong side effects and surgery only temporarily removes pain.

Conservative chiropractic care, on the other hand, is non-invasive and can lessen pain and discomfort, while maintaining joint mobility and allowing the patient to live a reasonable lifestyle for longer. By using spinal manipulation and other holistic methods, chiropractic can reduce pain and increase mobility, while at home exercises are effective for stretching and strengthening the lower back.

    Chiropractic and Fertility

Bodies are amazing networks of interacting systems that work together to accomplish many tasks, including the creation of life, and the nervous system is the master, coordinating and affecting all other systems. Chiropractic operates on the belief that maintaining a healthy spine promotes the health of the entire body. By removing misalignment and interruptions from the nervous system, which communicates to the body via passageways that travel through the spine, chiropractic can help the body perform as it was meant to. This means that chiropractic treatment can improve the function of all systems in the body, including the reproductive system.

In many cases, fertility issues stem from poor nervous system function, high stress and lifestyle habits. At Therapeutic Solutions LLC, we can reduce interference in the nervous system by adjusting the spine and maintaining proper alignment. Once the nervous system is allowed to function better, the body is better able to heal itself and function more efficiently, which can help increase fertility.

It is also important to know that chiropractic care is compatible with other accepted approaches to resolving infertility and can greatly improve the chances of successful procedures, including in vitro fertilization.

    Rotator Cuff Tears

One of the most common injuries to occur in the shoulder is a tear in the rotator cuff, which is a group of four muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder to provide movement and stability. The tendons from these muscles attach to the top of the humerus, and this is where most tears occur, although muscles are sometimes involved.  Rotator cuff tears can be caused by direct blows to the shoulder, by falling on the arm while it is outstretched and by having your arm yanked. Impingement (tendinitis), where the rotator cuff tendons rub against the shoulder blade, can also lead the rotator cuff to become inflamed, fray and weaken.

People most susceptible to these injuries include swimmers, tennis players, baseball players and other participants in activities that involve a lot of arm movement overhead. Your risk for injury is also higher if you are over the age of 40 since muscles and tendons lose elasticity as you age.

If you have torn your rotator cuff, we can help you heal without the need for steroid injections or surgery. Here at Therapeutic Solutions LLC in Newport News, VA, we use therapies, such as electrical muscle stimulation and inferential electro-therapy, to promote healing and reduce pain and inflammation. Additionally, chiropractic adjustments and targeted exercises can be used to restore mobility and range of movement. In about six to eight weeks, you will notice a significant improvement.

    Degenerative Disc Disease

As you age, the cumulative effect of daily stresses and occasional, unnoticed injuries begins to take a toll on your spine. While the gradual degeneration of the spinal discs may not cause a problem for many people, in some cases, you can experience chronic, debilitating pain. This condition is called degenerative disc disease (DDD), and it can cause major back pain. If you have DDD and back pain is a main symptom, Therapeutic Solutions LLC, Chiropractic and Wellness can help you manage your pain.

Back pain as a result of DDD can be caused by three factors. The first is that degeneration in the spinal joints may have disturbed the alignment and mechanics of the spine. Secondly, thinning and degenerative discs might be bulging and placing pressure on nerves in the spine. Thirdly, spinal stenosis (the narrowing of the spine) can cause back and leg pain. Dr. Christopher Brill will work to discover what the specific cause of your back pain is so that he can develop the best chiropractic treatment for managing your pain. Using chiropractic, the doctor will work to improve joint mechanics, improve spinal motion and reduce inflammation.

To help treat your DDD symptoms, Dr. Brill may choose to adjust your spine, provide trigger point therapy, manually stretch your joints, conduct therapeutic massage or provide instrument-assisted soft tissue therapy. By combining these chiropractic treatments, he can alleviate the pain associated with degenerative disc disease.

    Tendonitis

Whether you have tennis elbow, runner’s knee or pitcher’s shoulder, if you have tendonitis, you want relief. Characterized by soreness, aching and chronic discomfort, tendonitis is caused when a tendon is overused, used improperly or injured. If you have tendonitis, Therapeutic Solutions LLC has the natural approach to help your body heal and prevent future injury.

Dr. Christopher Brill has the experience and expertise to provide the quality chiropractic you need to effectively treat your tendonitis. Rather than treating just your symptoms, chiropractic addresses the root cause of the condition. Initially, the chiropractor may choose to support and protect the injured tendons with a brace to loosen the tendon and reduce inflammation. Other treatments might include ultrasound, icing the area, rest, electrical muscle stimulation, strengthening exercises, massage and manual trigger point therapy. Manual trigger point therapy is when firm pressure is applied by hand on a trigger point for several seconds. The muscle is then stretched afterward. With chiropractic treatment, pain and inflammation should decrease over several weeks, although full healing will not occur until at least six weeks have passed.

During the first few weeks of treatment, scar tissue will form to help bond the tissue back together, but the scar tissue must be broken down for the tendon to regain flexibility, which will help prevent future injury. Continued chiropractic can ensure that the scar tissue is broken down and that circulation is increased to the tissue.

If you’re experiencing tendonitis pain, it’s time to start the healing process without reliance on pain killers. For more information visit our website at www.therapeutic-solutions-llc.com or feel free to contact Dr. Brill and staff at 757-873-4131.

    Fibromyalgia

Although between 3 and 6 percent of Americans are reported to have fibromyalgia, it still remains a rather mysterious syndrome. Fibromyalgia is typically characterized by widespread pain in all four quadrants of the body for more than three months, by tenderness or pain in at least 11 points when pressure is applied or by a combination of other symptoms. These other symptoms include fatigue, chronic headaches, jaw pain, sleep disorders, dizziness, impaired memory, irritable bowels, sensitive skin, morning stiffness, muscle pain after exertion and menstrual cramping. While there are some disorders, such as anemia, Lyme disease, hormonal imbalances and allergies, that can cause fibromyalgia-like symptoms, if no underlying cause is found, then Therapeutic Solutions LLC, Chiropractic and Wellness Center can help relieve your symptoms with chiropractic care.

Chiropractic care has consistently been ranked as one of the best therapies for fibromyalgia. By combining chiropractic and massage therapy, ultrasound and electrical stimulation, Dr. Christopher Brill can help relieve stress, pain and other symptoms in fibromyalgia sufferers. In addition, he can help recommend other natural treatments that you can do at home to relieve the symptoms.

Dr. Brill has the knowledge, training and expertise to help you understand and manage fibromyalgia, and with your active participation, you can improve your quality of life with the syndrome.

    Slipped Disc

Many of the patients we see here at Therapeutic Solutions LLC, Chiropractic and Wellness Center are seeking treatment for a slipped, or herniated, disc in their back. While commonly referred to as a slipped disc, this condition actually occurs when the disc, which is the soft cushion between each of the vertebrae in your spine, ruptures or splits. This can happen as a part of natural degeneration over time or if the discs become dehydrated and brittle. Whichever the reason, chiropractic provides a safe and non-invasive treatment for this condition.

If you are experiencing neck pain, back pain, stiffness, tingling, weakness or other symptoms that a doctor has diagnosed as a symptom of a slipped disc, receiving chiropractic treatment can help. Typically, treatment involves manual manipulation and adjustments. Dr. Christopher Brill will use his hands to gently flex the spinal joints to stimulate the surrounding nerves and tissue that are causing the pain. This will help increase range of motion and decrease pain and other symptoms of a herniated disc.

You don’t have to rely on pain killers or resort to surgery immediately. With the help of chiropractic you can relieve pain and heal naturally. For more information visit our website at www.therapeutic-solutions-llc.com or feel free to contact Dr. Brill & staff at 757-873-4131.

    Neck Pain

Here at Therapeutic Solutions LLC, we believe in healing the body, not just one ailment. But many times patients see us for localized pain and discomfort, such as neck pain, and it is our first priority to treat that condition first. By treating this area, the rest of the body also starts healing thanks to better balance and harmony. Unfortunately, neck pain is a common complaint with our patients, as it can result from injuries or repetitive motions and strain.

The following causes can lead to neck pain, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine:

    • ·         Bad posture

    • ·         Bending over for long periods of time

    • ·         Whiplash and vehicle accidents

    • ·         Sleeping in the wrong position

    • ·         Turning or twisting

    • ·         Sprains

    • ·         Medical conditions

    • ·         Infection or cancer of the spine

Pain medications only relieve the pain and discomfort for a short period of time, and it typically returns in a few hours. With chiropractic care provided by Dr. Christopher Brill, patients are addressing the cause of their neck pain, not just covering up the discomfort. This provides them with a long-term solution toward balancing their spine’s vertebrae and improving the pain continuously. Be sure to give us a call at 757-873-4131, e-mail drbrill.therapeuticsolutions@yahoo.com or visit our chiropractic office in Newport News, VA to learn more about neck pain treatments.

    Sciatica and Chiropractic Care

    Sciatica

Sciatica is a frustrating, reoccurring condition for many sufferers.  It is characterized by stinging, tingling, burning and numbness of the lower extremities.  This collection of symptoms is a result of pressure placed on the sciatic nerve, one of the longest nerves in the body.  Sciatica can be triggered or aggravated by abrupt movement or extended periods of sitting or standing.

Fortunately, patients can find relief from sciatica through chiropractic care.  Spinal adjustments and manipulations, as well as other therapeutic services, can help address the source of sciatic nerve pain.  By correcting misalignment, you can relieve pressure on the nerve and restore the quality of your life.  When you visit Therapeutic Solutions LLC for chiropractic care, we provide you with resources and information to help you manage your discomfort and maintain an active lifestyle.

If you are suffering from sciatica, or you know someone who is searching for lasting relief, contact our practice and learn more about the chiropractic treatment options available to you.

    Chiropractic Care and Whiplash

    Whiplash

When the body is thrown forward, the head has a tendency to snap forward and then backward again.  This commonly results in an injury known as whiplash, affecting the soft tissues of the neck.  The discomfort can even extend to surrounding muscle groups in your head, chest, shoulders and arms.  Patients may experience:

    • Decreased range of motion

    • Tightness in the neck

    • Muscles feeling hard or knotted

    • Tenderness

    • Headaches at the base of the skull

Although whiplash is often a result of auto accidents, they can also develop from roller coasters, amusement park rides and sports injuries.  If you are experiencing whiplash, chiropractic care can help relieve tension and correct misalignments that encourage your overall healing process.  I invite patients who have recently been in an auto accident, or think they may be experiencing whiplash, to visit my practice for an evaluation.
