Sacroiliac Joint Function

Have you ever felt an unexplained pain in your lower back when you try to cross one leg over the other? If so, your sacroiliac joint (SI joint) may be acting up. The sacroiliac joint is the joint located in the pelvis, linking the iliac bone (pelvis) to the sacrum (lowest part of the spine above the tailbone). It is an essential component for shock absorption to prevent impact forces during walking from reaching the spine. If your SI joint is not functioning properly, you may feel chronic pain in your lower back, buttocks, or in the legs. When you do, Dr. Christopher Brill of Therapeutic Solutions, LLC can provide you with relief.

The SI joint transfers weight and forces between your upper body and legs. Like any other joint in the body, it can degenerate or its support ligaments can become loose or injured. If this happens to you, chronic SI joint pain can make it difficult to perform daily activities, and can only get worse over time if left untreated.

If you are suffering from disturbed sleep patterns, hip/groin pain or pelvic pain, please give us a call. For more information visit our website at www.therapeutic-solutions-llc.com or feel free to contact Dr. Brill & staff at 757-873-4131.

Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is a very common condition, but the symptoms and severity of the pain vary greatly depending on the situation. While a lower back muscle strain might be excruciating enough to visit the emergency room while a degenerating disc might only cause mild, intermittent discomfort. Dr. Christopher Brill of Therapeutic Solutions LLC in Newport News, VA is an expert in his field, and has been treating his patients of all ages and sizes for a number of years.

According to the American Chiropractic Association, one-half of all working Americans admit to having back pain symptoms each year. Your back is a complicated structure of bones, joints, ligaments and muscles, while it is basically the support system for your entire body, your back can be very fragile. Back pain is often associated with sprained ligaments, strained muscles, ruptured discs and irritated joints. In many cases, these injuries are sustained by athletes participating in contact sports, but pain can also come to those who sit in the same position for the majority of the day, have poor posture and overuse.

Dr. Brill has been practicing in Newport News, VA for a number of years and has developed a unique treatment plan for patients suffering from lower back pain. Through the use of manipulation and adjustments, Dr. Brill will safely and effectively relieve the patient from their back pain. In some cases, the treatment will work right away but in others, patients will need multiple visits to treat the pain and prevent it from coming back in the future. In a study conducted by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, researchers recommended that low back pain sufferers choose chiropractic care because it is the most conservative approach.

Sports Injuries

When it comes to recovering from a sports-related injury, we know that your goal isn’t just to relieve the pain temporarily, you want to kick it for good. Dr. Christopher Brill helps patients reach that goal through various chiropractic procedures that not only heal pain, but help prevent any further injury from occurring.

It doesn’t matter if you are a professional athlete or just someone who likes to exercise; Dr. Brill has the tools necessary to fix any number of sports-related injuries. Many studies have shown that chiropractic care is able treat an injured athlete more effectively that a medical doctor. Unlike a medical doctor, chiropractors are trained to see the human body as one entity rather than seeing one injury at a time. This allows chiropractors to have a better understanding of the body as a whole, leading to less recurring injuries in the future.

There a number of injuries associated with athletes. According to the American Chiropractic Association, the most commonly injured areas of the body are the ankles, knees, shoulders, elbows and spine. Spinal injuries are by far the most concerning. The Global Burden of Disease 2010 did a study that showed that lower back pain is the single leading cause of disability worldwide. Spinal injuries are very treatable, especially with a chiropractor.

Without doubt, competing athletes or even the weekend warrior who wants to be at their very best should consider regular chiropractic care for the competitive edge. Not only will it help the body function at an improved level, chiropractic care is good for overall health. Through chiropractic manipulations, Dr. Brill can increase blood flow for quicker post-performance relief, decrease stress and improve the immune system.

How Can Chiropractic Help Piriformis Syndrome?

Located deep in the buttock, below the gluteus maximus, the piriformis muscle extends from the sacrum to the outer hip bone and is responsible for stabilizing the hip joint and lifting and rotating the thighs away from the body. Often confused with sciatica because it produces a similar pain in the lower back and into the legs, piriformis syndrome is caused when the piriformis muscle becomes shortened or tightened or when the muscle spasms and becomes inflamed. When inflamed, the muscle can put pressure on the sciatic nerve that runs beneath it. If you are experiencing pain, tingling or numbness in your lower back, buttocks and legs, Dr. Christopher Brill can relive your pain and restore you to health in Newport News, VA.

A common factor that leads to the development of piriformis syndrome is the performance of activities with excessive weight bearing, changing direction and running. This means that many athletes, namely runners and weight lifters, suffer from this condition. Externally rotating the hip for extended periods of time is another factor. This is most often seen in ballet dancers and those who walk with their feet turned outward. Misalignment of the pelvis bones can also be involved.

At Therapeutic Solutions, LLC, we can use trigger point therapy, adjustment, stretching and strengthening exercises combined with inferential electo-therapy and electrical muscle stimulation to treat piriformis syndrome. These therapies reduce spasms and tightness and help the muscle heal. If your syndrome is caused by the way you walk, foot orthotics may be necessary.

Spinal Stenosis

If you’re experiencing lower-back pain, loss of feeling in your legs or a limp, you may have spinal stenosis, a degenerative condition that affects the spine. Symptoms are caused by a narrowing of the spinal canal, which can occur for multiple reasons, including thickened ligaments, a spreading infection, abscess, a congenital anomaly, degenerative changes or vertebral dislocations. While the painful and debilitating condition is chronic and without a cure, at Therapeutic Solutions LLC we can help you manage your pain, reduce symptoms and improve your quality of life.

Discomfort caused by stenosis builds gradually, separating the condition from others, such as herniated discs, which can have similar symptoms that appear much more rapidly. The treatment for stenosis usually depends on its cause. While medical doctors recommend pain medications and even surgery to provide pain relief, medication can have strong side effects and surgery only temporarily removes pain.

Conservative chiropractic care, on the other hand, is non-invasive and can lessen pain and discomfort, while maintaining joint mobility and allowing the patient to live a reasonable lifestyle for longer. By using spinal manipulation and other holistic methods, chiropractic can reduce pain and increase mobility, while at home exercises are effective for stretching and strengthening the lower back.

Scoliosis

Here at Therapeutic Solutions LLC, we treat not just pain and discomfort following traumas or injuries, but chronic conditions like scoliosis as well. When a patient has scoliosis, he or she has an abnormal curving of the spine that can be very painful. According to the National Scoliosis Foundation, approximately 6 million people in the United States are suffering from scoliosis, leading many of them to seek chiropractic treatment for the condition.

The common symptoms of patients with scoliosis include lower back pain, feeling fatigue in the spine when standing or sitting for long periods of time, having uneven shoulders or hips, a spine that curves more to one side or the other, or another type of abnormal curving of the spine. At our Newport News, VA chiropractic clinic, we first provide a physical exam and take x-rays before diagnosing patients with scoliosis.

Treatment for scoliosis depends on a number of factors, including where the spinal curve is, the severity of the condition, the probable cause, and if the patient’s body is still growing. For patients who are adolescents and their body is still growing, we recommend they wear a back brace. This helps their spine grow in straighter by the time their body has finished growing. For adult patients, we utilize several treatments, including back braces and surgery.
